Do Colleges Really Give Away Laptops?
It depends. The laptops that colleges provide usually have stipulations and terms and conditions attached to them. For example, some colleges provide students with discounts, while others roll the cost of the laptop into your tuition. Be advised, not all colleges offer a laptops to all students. Always do your research and check with the college to find out what’s available to you.
Why Do Some Colleges Provide Laptops?
Online schools that offer online classes know the importance of being able to access the internet from anywhere – so it makes sense for them to provide easy access. Laptops are a big part of accessing these classes, and the option to own one is a big help to students relying on financial aid to cover the cost of tuition, but can’t afford the lump sump expense of a laptop up front. By offering discounts, rolling the funds into your tuition, or giving you a “loaner” laptop, online schools are essentially helping you get a head start that you could not otherwise have accomplished.
Financially and logically, it’s a no-brainer.
Laptop FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: What laptop do I get? Can I choose?
A1: Typically colleges have specific laptops in stock they give away. For example, Full Sail partnered with Apple to give away their MacBook Pro’s. This isn’t always the case, as some colleges offer discounts on laptops and let you choose a laptop from a specified list. Tip: MyCollegeLaptop.com has a helpful database of colleges that offer laptops sorted by brand…from Asus, and Apple, to Dell and Sony. If brand is important to you, be sure to do your research, as each college is different. Discuss your options with each school’s representative you plan on attending.
Q2: Do I get to keep the laptop? What if I drop out?
A2: Again, all colleges have different rules, but for the most part the laptop is yours to keep. However, if you drop out before graduating, the college may require you to return the laptop depending on how far along you are. Be sure to check the school’s laptop ownership rules before making assumptions.
Q3: Why don’t ALL online colleges offer laptops?
A3: Good question. Colleges don’t like to offer incentivized reasons to enroll – and would rather their prospective students to enroll because they genuinely want to go to school there. However, there is little evidence to support this, and every month there are more online and campus based schools that are jumping on board and providing laptops to enrolled students.
